Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder marked by cycles of overeating followed by behaviors meant to “undo” the eating. These behaviors can include vomiting, using laxatives, fasting, or excessive exercise. Many people with bulimia feel stuck in this cycle and experience a lot of shame or secrecy around their eating.

Common Signs and Symptoms

Bulimia nervosa may include:

  • Episodes of binge eating (eating large amounts of food in a short time)

  • Feeling a loss of control during binges

  • Purging behaviors such as vomiting or laxative use

  • Excessive exercise or periods of strict fasting

  • Frequent trips to the bathroom after meals

  • Sore throat, dental problems, or swollen cheeks

  • Strong concerns about body weight or shape

Health Risks to Be Aware Of

Bulimia can take a serious toll on the body, including:

  • Dehydration and electrolyte imbalances

  • Heart rhythm problems

  • Digestive issues and stomach pain

  • Damage to teeth and gums

  • Increased anxiety, depression, and mood swings
