Binge Eating Disorder (BED) is characterized by repeated episodes of eating large amounts of food, often very quickly and to the point of discomfort. Unlike bulimia, binge eating is not followed by purging behaviors. Many people with BED feel distressed, ashamed, or out of control during these episodes.

Common Signs and Symptoms

Binge Eating Disorder may involve:

  • Frequent episodes of eating large quantities of food

  • Eating faster than usual or eating when not physically hungry

  • Feeling uncomfortably full after eating

  • Eating alone due to embarrassment

  • Feelings of guilt, shame, or distress after bingeing

Health Risks to Be Aware Of

Over time, BED can impact both physical and emotional health, including:

  • Digestive discomfort and fatigue

  • Increased risk of high blood pressure and diabetes

  • Sleep problems

  • Low self-esteem and body image concerns

  • Depression and anxiety
